News BlogThe Crash Returns as Nervous Investors Sell.It was back to 2008 today after disappointing news items were released from the Unites States challenging investor assumptions about an economic recovery later this year. Consequently, global stock markets plummeted. U.S. stock index futures were down with about 40 minutes before markets open, suggesting that stocks would fall at the start of trading. Futures for the Dow Jones industrial average were down 120 points, to 8830. Futures for the broader S&P 500 were down 13 points, to 918. The disheartenment began Tuesday evening when Aloca Inc. said it would cut about 13,500 jobs, or 13% of its workforce. Then, this morning, Time Warner Inc. shocked America when it confirmed it was going to report a net loss for 2008, contrary to the earlier suggested profits of at least $1.04 (US) per share. ADP, a private payroll company reported companies in the U.S disposed of 700,000 jobs in December, well above the predicted loss of only 480,000 jobs. The continued turmoil in the stock market is causing nervous investors everywhere to sell their shares, consumer confidence has tumbled and forecasters are predicting a much more grim 2009 than earlier suggested.
